McCombe Thompson is an art and design practice founded by Stephen McCombe and Sarah Thompson in 2018 in Antwerp, Belgium. Now working from studios in London and New York, the practice creates limited-edition hand-made furniture, objects, and artworks, and undertakes commissions for a discerning international clientele.
Their work has been featured in Architectural Digest France, Architectural Digest Italy, and The Wall Street Journal Magazine (USA).
Rooted in post-minimalist and landscape-based movements of the late 20th century, the practice emphasises clarity of form, sensitivity to context, and a disciplined use of natural materials. Wood is a primary medium—chosen for its directness and its ability to register the hand, weight, and subtle variation. Other materials used are metal, textiles, and glass.
Each project evolves through a highly physical and iterative process—guided by full-scale mock-ups, hand drawings, and material studies in the workshop. Making is treated as a mode of enquiry, where forms are mainly resolved through construction rather than predefined outcomes. This approach invites a direct, material-led resolution that foregrounds process over preconception.
Stephen McCombe, artist, was born in Germany and raised on the North Fork of Long Island. He studied fine art at Middlebury College in Vermont before continuing his education in furniture design in London. Early in his career, he worked with British designer Faye Toogood, gaining experience in concept-led, material-driven design.
Sarah Thompson, artist, also a graduate of Middlebury College, studied literature, art history, and languages before beginning her career in product development at Google, working in both London and Brussels. Her background informs a narrative and cross-disciplinary approach within the practice’s work.
